Scanning on an HP ENVY 4512 printer I downloaded and installed the full 'recommended' printer software for the HP ENVY 4510 series printer and tried to scan, and am told to 'Open the HP Printer Software and select 'Scanner Actions' and then select 'Manage Scan to Computer'. Choose Start→Control Panel. Type scanners in the Control Panel search field and press Enter.

Click Save Profile to return to the Properties dialog box and then click the Close button twice.

When you're ready to run a scan, place the item to be scanned in your scanner.
Depending on your model, the item may be placed on a flat 'bed' with a hinged cover or fed through a tray. Check your scanner's manual for the specific procedure to initiate a scan (for example, pressing a Scan or Start button). After you begin the scan, your computer automatically detects it and displays a dialog box showing you the scan progress and allowing you to view and save the scanned item.
Here's a brief tutorial to help you enable scan options in the HP Officejet 6500A Plus All-in-one printer. The steps should work for most of the latest HP web-enabled printers.

Step 1: Go to Control Panel –> Device and Printers and double-click on the HP printer icon. You should find Scanner Actions there. Under that, click on Activate Scan to Computer.
Step 2: Well, that's about it! You will be greeted with a box mentioning that the printer is ready to scan documents to your computer.
